Focus returns to the Premier League this weekend. Here are our predictions…
After another manic week of European action, the Premier League returns this weekend with some mouth-watering fixtures on the schedule in week nine.
After being written off after last Sunday’s defeat by Manchester United, Liverpool bounced back in emphatic fashion with 5-1 win against Eintracht Frankfurt while there were also Champions League wins for Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Newcastle.
Let’s take a look at what lies ahead over the next few days as domestic events take center stage and offer our weekly Premier League predictions.
Leeds v West Ham (20:00)
West Ham were a disorganized mess against Brentford on Monday night. It ended 2-0, but the visitors could and should have been more emphatic winners.
A repeat of that performance at Elland Road would have a similar result.
Leeds have made a solid return to the Premier League, but their long-term fate will be decided in games like this one.
Prediction: Leeds 2-1 West Ham

Chelsea v Sunderland (3pm)
Sunderland have been the pick of the Premier League rookies so far but the trip to Chelsea represents their first clash with a title contender.
The loss of outstanding summer signing Omar Alderete to concussion protocols is a major blow for the Wearsiders, who must find a way to stop Chelsea scoring free goals.
Enzo Maresca’s side have scored 10 goals in their last three games in all competitions, including a 5-1 win against Ajax on Wednesday night.
Prediction: Chelsea 3-0 Sunderland
Newcastle v Fulham (3pm)
Newcastle performed well to beat Benfica in midweek, a welcome return to form after last Saturday’s defeat to Brighton. In Nick Woltemeide, they have a man in form and Fulham’s first task will be to stop the free-scoring German.
The Cottagers have lost their last three league games and it’s hard to see them coming away with anything here.
Prediction: Newcastle 3-1 Fulham
Manchester United v Brighton (17:30)
Has Manchester United finally clicked under Ruben Amorim? That’s the million dollar question. The win at Liverpool was the first time they had won back-to-back league games under the Portuguese, but most punters will need more convincing.
Amorim are unlikely to pick Brighton as their next opponent as they try to build momentum. The Seagulls have won each of their last three away league games at Old Trafford.
Prediction: Man United 1-2 Brighton
Brentford v Liverpool (20:00)
Liverpool’s squad depth was on full display against Eintracht as Arne Slott made five changes to his starting XI and then watched them run amok in Germany.
The big question ahead of the game is what he will do with Mohamed Salah. Will the Egypt star be brought back into the starting XI or will he spend another night watching from the bench.
Brentford looked very good against West Ham, even considering the standard of the opposition, and will not be a failure.
Prediction: Brentford 1-2 Liverpool
Bournemouth v Nottingham Forest (2pm)
The game looks different now than it did a week ago. Forest looked more organized and more disciplined in last night’s 2-0 Europa League defeat by Porto and the feeling is that they will be harder to beat under Sean Dyche than they were under Ange Postecoglou.
That said, Bournemouth have the ability to break down any side. And with Antoine Semenho in scintillating form, we imagine the Cherries to get the job done.
Prediction: Bournemouth 1-0 Nottingham Forest
Arsenal v Crystal Palace (2pm)
Can Palace stop Arsenal giants? They will need to play better than they did in their 1-0 loss to Cypriot side AEK Larnaca last night if they are to have any chance of causing an upset at the Emirates.
Even if they are at their best, it may not be enough against a ball side that looks strong all over the pitch. And in Victor Gokeres, they may have found the number nine they lacked in previous failed title attempts.
Prediction: Arsenal 3-0 Crystal Palace
Aston Villa v Manchester City (14:00)
Like Palace, Villa were surprisingly beaten in Europe last night. Unai Emery’s men went to the Netherlands on the back of five consecutive victories but were unable to overcome the Go Ahead Eagles.
A repeat of that performance will result in a similar result against Manchester City.
City need a few more wins to really convince they can mount a serious title challenge and that would be a good place to start.
Prediction: Aston Villa 1-2 Manchester City
Wolves v Burnley (2pm)
Is it too early to describe this as six relegation points? Probably not, as it’s hard to imagine any of these sides getting out of trouble on a long winning streak.
Burnley certainly boosted their chances of staying up with an excellent win over Leeds last weekend, while Wolves were once again disappointing with a loss to Sunderland.
Equality doesn’t help either side, so…
Prediction: Wolves 1-1 Burnley
Everton v Tottenham (16:30)
It’s getting harder and harder to figure out what to make of Thomas Frank’s Spurs. Poor against Villa last weekend and equally poor in the midweek draw with Monaco. In fact, the win at Leeds on October 4 is their only win in their last five games.
Everton are yet to lose at their new home at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, and David Moyes is building an effective if slightly uninspiring squad that won’t give much away this season.
Prediction: Everton 1-1 Tottenham
