Federal health authorities are advising consumers that more than 140,000 bottles of cholesterol medication are being recalled for « failed dissolution claims. »
The recall has affected several bottles of Atorvastatin Calcium 10 mg tablets (prescription only), which are used to lower cholesterol and prevent heart disease, heart attacks and strokes, the FDA said in its surveillance report.
Atorvastatin Calcium tablets are a generic form of Lipitor and a drug in a group called statins. It works by inhibiting an enzyme in the liver of the body used to make cholesterol.

If a drug has « failed dissolution requirements, » it means that the drug did not dissolve in laboratory tests according to official standards. If the pill doesn’t dissolve as it should, the drug may not work as effectively in controlling cholesterol levels.

According to the FDA’s website, the warning is considered a Class II recall, where use or exposure to the product « may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health effects or where the likelihood of serious adverse health effects is low. »

Medication it is manufactured by Alkem Laboratories and distributed by Ascend Laboratories LLC.
There are eight lot numbers with expiration dates ranging from July 2026 to February 2027. Bottle sizes included 90 tablets, 500 tablets and 1,000 tablets.
