Pakistan take on the USA in the T20 World Cup tomorrow. Read our in-depth review here…
Pakistan overcame a tough game at the weekend but head straight into another in Colombo when they face USA tomorrow
USA pulled off one of the biggest shocks in T20 World Cup history two years ago when they beat Pakistan in a Super Over and came close to eclipsing that on Saturday, only to be denied by India captain Suryakumar Yadav in Mumbai.
Yadav smashed a brilliant 84 not out as those around him failed before Mohammed Siraj did the damage with the ball for the tournament hosts.
The United States walked away with a huge credit, and Pakistan’s leader Salman Mirza says no one should be surprised anymore by the performance of the associate members.
« That’s the beauty of cricket; tight games are great to watch, » he said. « The main goal is to win the match. We won the match against the Netherlands and we will try to win the upcoming matches as well.
« T20 cricket is a format where I believe there is very little difference between two teams. One good innings or one good spell can make the difference and the way the matches have gone so far proves that. »
Tomorrow’s match at the Sinhalese Sports Club is the first day/night T20I staged at the venue, adding another layer of intrigue.
« Once we reach the ground and assess the conditions, only then can we plan properly. As the game progresses, we will continue to change our approach accordingly, » Mirza added.
« In night games the fast bowlers usually get a bit of help. We’ll see tomorrow what the conditions are like and if there’s any dew. »
Pakistan’s win against the Netherlands was inspired by Faheem Ashraf’s underdog heroics in an opening encounter that was too close to console their legions of fans.
Assuming they do indeed boycott the India match – talks between the Pakistan, India and Bangladesh cricket boards are ongoing – then again there is no room for error for Salman Agha’s team. Defeat here and qualifying for the next phase would be very difficult.
Babar Azam went into the Netherlands match under pressure, but his 18-ball 15 failed to silence the former Pakistan captain’s critics. However, he will be given another chance to impress.
USA is likely to be without bowler Ali Khan due to injury.
Pakistan: Sahibzada Farhan, Saim Ayub, Salman Agha (c), Babar Azam, Shadab Khan, Usman Khan (wk), Mohammad Nawaz, Faheem Ashraf, Shaheen Afridi, Salman Mirza, Abrar Ahmed
USA: Andries Gous (wk), Saiteja Mukkamalla, Monank Patel (c), Milind Kumar, Sanjay Krishnamurthi, Shubham Ranjane, Harmeet Singh, Mohammad Mohsin, Shadley van Schalkwyk, Jasdeep Singh, Saurabh Netravalkar

Pakistan really need their most experienced players to come to the fore. Babar and paceman Shaheen Shah Afridi have been off color for some time and their contributions are needed if Pakistan are to go deep into the competition.
Before they entertain any thoughts of the Super Eights, Pakistan have to get through another nasty test against a USA team, losing nothing and winning everything.
The 2024 replay looks tight, but this could be another encounter that could go all the way.
We imagine Pakistan will surpass him because they have more match winners. However, it will hardly be easy.
