Carrick and Fernandes fumed at a penalty as Manchester United dropped points

Michael Carrick cut in frustration afterwards Manchester United were ended in a draw at Bournemouthinsisting his side were denied what should have been a winning second penalty in a match that quickly descended into chaos.

United had a loud shout for a spot-kick which he waved away in a situation that Carrick said was identical to one that had already been ruled earlier in the game. « Big opportunity to go 2-0 up and we get one penalty and not the other, » he said.

« It’s really the same thing – a two-handed catch. He misses one so, I don’t know which one, but he doesn’t give us the second. I think they’re both penalties and that’s a huge moment in the game.

« It’s as obvious as you can get that you’ve already given one to not give the other. It’s clear. If that’s what he thinks is a penalty to start with, then the second one should be. I don’t see how you can not give that. And then the goal and then it was chaos. »

Maguire’s red card adds to United’s frustration

Harry Maguire’s dismissal, which left United playing a man down in the final stages, added further displeasure to an already disappointing night, although Carrick was measured in his response when asked if the sending off was harsh.

« Maybe there was chaos at that point so the decisions came in different ways. Ours should have been a penalty before, we would have had two penalties and then it wouldn’t have happened.

« Credit to Bournemouth for the way they play, really energetic and positive and constantly testing you. Going with ten men for so long and having to make changes, the lads from the bench finishing the game did really well. Delighted with that, sending the last few moments which could have been really difficult but we did well.

« At the end of the day the way things have gone you can lose these games so to get a point we’ll take it but we’re disappointed not to get all three. »

Fernandes echoes the manager’s anger

Bruno Fernandes was equally scathing in his assessment of the officiating, citing the decision not to award a penalty for a foul on Amad as particularly difficult to accept.

« We don’t get a penalty and then we get a penalty against, where it’s the same situation as Amad, one is one, one isn’t, » the United captain told Sky Sports. « I know it’s difficult for the referee to give two penalties to the same team in one match, but I don’t understand why VAR doesn’t intervene in this situation. »

Fernandez was also frustrated by what he saw as a wider pattern in the way smaller players were treated. « Amad gets to a point where he’s going to shoot and they push him, you can see something throws him completely off balance. It’s frustrating for the small players because they always say the small players are soft and when it comes to the bigger players, they end up making the fouls. »

Despite the disappointment, Fernandez was quick to put the result in the context of football’s Champions League race. « Premier League is very difficult and we have a lot of competition. Aston Villa is close to us, Liverpool and Chelsea too. Our aim is to go forward by continuing to get points, we have to get away from them and the best way to do that is to keep getting points.”

He also reflects on what life under Michael Carrick has brought to the dressing room. « The last few weeks we have been positive with the result and it gives positive energy to the team to know that we can go anywhere and get results. We have been in very good form under Michael and today we had to suffer and we got a point, we took something from it. »
