Senegal formally lodged a complaint with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) after a stunning decision to lay bare the nation of their African Cup of Nations title.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced the title had been awarded to Morocco almost two months after the controversial final, which was eventually won by Senegal thanks to Pape Gueye’s extra-time winner.
However, this followed remarkable scenes in which Senegal refused to play after tournament hosts Morocco were awarded a highly controversial penalty in stoppage time.
After a delay of around 17 minutes, Senegal’s players returned to the field and a reckless Panenka was saved by Brahim Diaz, forcing extra time.
Fury became unbridled joy for Senegal after Gueye’s win, but CAF stripped them of the title following an appeal by Morocco.
The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has requested that CAF’s decision be overturned and the original result reinstated. As part of their submission, the FSF is also seeking a freeze on the deadline for submitting their full appeal until CAF provides the « full grounds » and reasoning behind its initial decision.
CAS confirmed that the process was underway, but noted that the complexities of international sports law made a quick resolution unlikely. Because of the strict procedural rules regarding how and when both sides present their evidence, the court said it was « not possible to predict a procedural timetable and indicate when a hearing will be scheduled. »
CAS Director General Matthew Reeb addressed the situation in an official statement.
He said: “CAS is perfectly equipped to resolve these types of disputes with the help of experts and independent arbitrators.
« We understand that teams and fans are anxious to learn the final decision, and we will ensure that the arbitration proceedings are conducted as expeditiously as possible while respecting the right of all parties to a fair hearing. »
