Tottenham Hotspur remain in Premier League the bottom three after Brighton scored in second-half injury time to rescue a point in north London.
In what was Roberto De Zerbi’s first home game in charge of Spurs, the home side’s longest unbeaten run of more than 90 years was extended to 15 games after Georginio Rutter equalized with just two minutes remaining to cancel out a wonderful goal from Xavi Simmons.
Simons thought he had given his side a vital three points with a fantastic strike with less than a quarter of an hour to go.
It came after Pedro Porro put De Zerbi’s men in front before Kaoru Mitoma equalized on the stroke of half-time.
The result did little to ease the woes of Tottenham fans as Brighton remain in the race for a place in Europe.
After Spurs started brightly, Brighton were forced to make an early substitution when Diego Gomez limped off after 20 minutes. Seconds later, the Seagulls almost went a goal back when Simons’ deflected shot slipped inches wide of the post.
Despite a promising start from the home side, they then found themselves millimeters behind just after the half-hour when Yankuba Minteh’s teasing cross was headed wide.
Under pressure from Danny Welbeck and facing his own goal, Mickey van de Ven hit the ball against the post before it somehow crossed the line and curled wide.
The offside flag eventually went up, but the Spurs defense looked shaky.
However, just minutes later, Porro headed Tottenham in front when a wonderful chipped ball into the box from Simmons was met by the Spaniard who nodded past the hapless Bart Verbruggen.

With the momentum in their favour, Simons came close to doubling the advantage when his low effort bounced off the post into Porro’s path. After the ensuing action, the defender launched a shot that was well saved by the Brighton keeper.
But on the stroke of half-time, the home crowd were silenced when Mitoma struck a fine first-time strike into the roof of the net from a tight angle to level Brighton.
It was largely a slick affair for 30 minutes after the break. It ended after less than a quarter of an hour when substitute Lucas Bergvall returned the ball high up the pitch.
He fed Simons, who squared his man before dropping his shoulder and unleashing an unstoppable curling effort that nestled into the net via the crossbar.
It was a shot worthy of winning any game. But that proved not to be the case as Rutter smashed home the equalizer in stoppage time after a mistake by Kevin Danso broke Tottenham hearts.
