Speaking at the McDonald’s Impact Summit, President Donald Trump urged the company to add more tartar sauce to Filet-O-Fish.
McDonald’s is quietly ending the era of self-service soda fountains nationwide.
The change, which has been years in the making, is part of a broader drive to modernize McDonald’s restaurantsreduce the need for labor and maintenance and adapt to changing consumer habits, which increasingly prefer pick-up, delivery and car delivery services instead of dining.

The company plans to complete the transition away from self-serve beverage stations in U.S. dining halls by 2032, and the changes are expected to be phased in over the next few years as restaurants are remodeled or upgraded.
In many places, drinks are already prepared behind the counter instead of customers pouring them, which marks a clear departure from the long-standing self-service model that has been a staple of fast food restaurants for decades.
For customers, the change means the end of familiar comfort, as self-service points have traditionally enabled easy filling and customization of drinks.

The business also gives McDonald’s better management of beverage portions, cleanliness and inventory, while reducing self-service machine maintenance costs.
The change reflects a broader trend across the fast food industry, where companies are prioritizing speed, efficiency and digital ordering over traditional dining experiences.
Meanwhile, McDonald’s has released an expanded menu that includes new « dirty soft drinks« and refreshing, when consumer demand moves beyond traditional soft drinks and coffee.
