Inter Milan became champions of Serie A

The San Siro erupted on Sunday night as Inter Milan were crowned Serie A champions for the 21st time in their history with a 2-0 win over Parma with three games to spare of Napoli reign as titulars.

Markus Thuram broke the deadlock in first-half stoppage time, slipping past Piotr Zielinski to finish across the face of goal from inside the box.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored a second in the 80th minute after substitute Lautaro Martinez headed to the byline and turned it across the face of the goal, and the Scudetto was theirs.

It is a remarkable achievement for Christian Kivu, who arrived in the summer with no previous managerial experience at the top level and won the title in his debut season with the club.

Federico Dimarco set a Serie A single-season record with 18 assists in the league, while Thuram was in outstanding form during the finals sprint, registering eight goals in April alone.

Inter end the campaign with 81 goals in Serie A, a figure bettered only by Barcelona and Bayern Munich in Europe’s top five leagues.

Napoli, who were the reigning champions, were left to watch after a goalless draw against Como on Saturday. The difference between the two sides is 12 points.

Inter also have their sights set on the Coppa Italia final against Lazio on May 13, with the double very close.

Juventus dropped points at home to relegated Verona

While Inter celebrated, Juventus squandered an opportunity to push for Champions League qualification after a disappointing 1-1 draw at home to already relegated Hellas Verona at the Allianz Stadium.

Kieran Bowie put the hosts on their feet in the 34th minute after Gleason Bremer gifted the ball into his own penalty area, and Juventus were unable to respond until Dusan Vlahovic – brought on at half-time – curled a stunning free-kick into the bottom corner in the 62nd minute.

From there, Juventus threw everything at the Verona backline, but goalkeeper Ivan Montippo made a great effort, denying Francisco Conceição twice in the final quarter, before Iker Bravo’s Edon Žegrova hit the post deep into stoppage time.

The result leaves Juventus three points clear of fifth-placed Como in the race for the final Champions League spot.

Verona, having lost 21 Serie A games this season, host Como next weekend in a match that could yet decide the shape of European qualification.

Tomori’s red card compounded Milan’s misery

It was an equally gloomy afternoon for Milan, who lost 2-0 at Sassuolo after being reduced to 10 men in the 24th minute.

Domenico Berardi put the home side ahead after just five minutes following a clever team move and Fikayo Tomori – already on a yellow card – brought down Armand Lauriente and was sent off inside the first quarter of an hour.

Lauriente then added a second in the 47th minute, converting a one-two with Christian Torstved to put the outcome beyond doubt.

Milan finished the match without a single shot on goal, recording an xG of just 0.24 across the entire 90 minutes in another very worrying attack from Massimiliano Allegri’s side.
