The National Institute of Standards and Technology can fire up to 500 employees, according to numerous reports – abbreviations that further threaten a newly built AI safety organization.
Axios announced this week that the American AI AI (AISI) and Chips for America Safety Institute, both part of NIS, will be « gutted » by cuts aimed at probation officials (who are usually in their first year or two at work ). And Bloomberg said some of these employees had already received a verbal notice of upcoming termination.
Even before the latest dismissal reports, Aisi’s future seemed uncertain. The Institute, which has to study the risks and develop standards surrounding the development of AI, was established last year as part of the then President Joe Biden’s executive order on AI safety. President Donald Trump canceled this order on his first day back to service, and the director of Aisie went earlier in February.
Fortune talks with a number of AI safety and policy organizations that have all criticized the reported abbreviations.
« These abbreviations, if confirmed, would seriously affect the government’s ability to investigate and deal with the critical II safety problems at a time when such expertise is more vibrant than ever, » said Jason Green-Low, CEO of the AI Policy Center.
