AI companies FTC: Tell us how you protect teenagers and children who use AI satellites

The Federal Trade Committee is launching an investigation into AI chatbots by seven companies, including the alphabet, Meta and Openai because of their use as satellites. The investigation involves finding how companies test, monitor and measure potential damage to children and teenagers.

A study of the media mind of 1060 teens in April and May found that over 70% used AI satellites and that more than 50% use them consistently – several times or more per month.

Experts have warned for some time that exposure to chatbots can be harmful to young people. A study found that Chatgpt provides bad teenage advice, such as how to conceal eating disorder or customize suicide notes. In some cases, chatbots ignored the comments that should be recognized as concerned, skipping the comment to continue the previous conversation. Psychologists call on the power supply to protect young people as a chat reminder that chatbot is not human and that teachers should prioritize AI literacy in schools

Not just children and teens. There are many adults who have experienced the negative effects of reading chatbots – whether for communion, advice or their personal search engine for facts and reliable sources. Chatbots more often than not to say what you think you want to hear, which can lead to lies. And blindly following the chatbot instructions is not always the right thing.

« With the development of AI Technologies, it is important to take into account the effects that chatbots can have on children, » FTC chairman Andrew N. Ferguson said in a statement. « The survey we are launching today will help us better understand how AI companies develop their products and the steps they take to protect children. »

The spokesman of the hero.

« Over the past year, we have expanded many essential safety features, including a whole new experience under 18 and the characteristic of parental insights, » the spokesman said.

The company behind the Snapchat social network also said it had taken steps to reduce risks. « After the introduction of my AI, SNAP uses its strict processes of safety and confidentiality to create a product that is not only useful for our community, but is also transparent and clear to its capabilities and restrictions, » the spokesman said.

Meta declined to comment both FTC nor any of the other four companies immediately responded to our request for comment.

FTC has issued orders and is looking for a teleconference with the seven companies for the time and form of its statements no later than September 25. Investigative companies include the creators of some of the largest AI chatbots in the world or popular social networks that include generative AI:

  • Alphabet (Google Mother Company)
  • Characteristic
  • Instagram;
  • Meta platforms;
  • Openai;
  • Click
  • X.AI.

Since the end of last year, some of these companies have updated or strengthened their more junior protection functions. Nature.Ai began to impose restrictions on how chatbots could respond to people under the age of 17 and add parental control. Instagram introduced teenage accounts last year and switched all users under the age of 17 to them, and Meta has recently identified the limits of the items that teenagers can have with chatbots.

FTC is looking for information from the seven companies about how they:

  • Providing revenue from consumer engagement
  • Process user inputs and generate outputs in response to user inquiries
  • Developing and approving characters
  • Measure, test and monitor for negative effects before and after deployment
  • mitigating the negative effects, especially for children
  • Use announcements, advertising and other ideas to inform users and parents about features, capabilities, envisaged audience, potential negative impacts and data collection practices
  • Follow and apply compliance with company rules and conditions of services (eg Community Guidelines and Age Restrictions) and
  • Use or share personal information obtained by conversations from users with chatbots
