Airbus on Friday ordered immediate repairs for thousands of its A320 family aircraft, affecting major airlines such as American AirlinesDelta Air Lines and United Airlines.
The order covers about 6,000 jets, making it one of the largest recalls in the European aviation giant’s history. The directive will also be completed the busiest tourist weekend According to Reuters in the United States.
« Analysis of a recent incident involving an A320 family aircraft has revealed that intense solar radiation can corrupt data critical to flight control operations, » Airbus said in a statement. « Airbus has therefore identified a significant number of A320 family aircraft currently in service that may be affected. »
According to Reuters, the recall was triggered by a JetBlue flight traveling from Cancun to New Jersey on October 30, which had to divert to Tampa after a sudden drop in altitude left several passengers injured.

The repair primarily involves reverting the aircraft to a previous software version, and the upgrade must be performed first airplanes can fly, reports Reuters.
American Airlines said about 340 of its 480 A320 family jets require an upgrade and expects most of the work to be completed « today or tomorrow. »
According to the airline, the process takes about two hours per plane.
« While we expect some delays in implementing these updates, we are focusing closely on limiting cancellations – esp with customers returning home from a vacation trip,” American said in a statement.

Delta Air Lines said fewer than 50 A321neo aircraft in its fleet will be affected and expects all upgrades to be completed by Saturday morning.
« As safety comes first, Delta is in full compliance with the directive and expects the potential operational impact to be limited, » Delta said in a statement.
United told FOX Business in an email that six aircraft in its fleet are affected.
« We expect minor disruption to a few flights, » a United spokeswoman said.
According to Reuters, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue and United Airlines are four of the world’s 10 largest operators of Airbus A320 family aircraft.

Other major airlines – including Lufthansa in Germany, IndiGo in Indiaand UK-based easyJet – said they would temporarily take the damaged aircraft out of service to complete repairs, Reuters reported.
The recall also prompted Colombian airline Avianca to suspend ticket sales until Dec. 8, affecting more than 70 percent of its fleet, according to Reuters.
