Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso says he does not regret leaving Kylian Mbappe on the pitch for 93 minutes in victory over third division Talavera in the King’s Cup.
Los Blancos were frightened by a side two levels below them and it took a brace from Mbappe to send a valiant effort on Wednesday night.
The Frenchman scored from the penalty spot before being involved in the own goal that put Madrid 2-0 up.
Talavera then pulled one back with 10 minutes to go, sparking hopes of a comeback, but those hopes were again dashed by the main man with just minutes to go.
Without Mbappe’s efforts, Madrid could find themselves in an embarrassing position competition, piling more pressure on Alonso.
But he explained his decision to leave his mascot on the field for the entire game.
Speaking at his post-match press conference, Alonso said: « Am I shocked by this match? No, I expected it, for Talavera it’s a unique match so I knew they would be very competitive and motivated.
« Why did Mbappe play 93 minutes? Because he scores goals.
« We finished the game suffering. These are things that happen in the Copa, I’ve seen it happen to other teams.
« Was the second half terrible? I’d say it was tough and exciting.
« We need to be more mature and consistent throughout the game, we keep letting games get out of hand. »
