Amad screamer canceled while the big guns settle for a point each

Amad Diallo’s wonderful goal was not enough for Ivory Coast to secure the win they needed to qualify for the knockout stages of the Africa Cup of Nations tonight.

The Manchester United winger opened the scoring after 51 minutes, but just five minutes later, Junior Chamadeu’s shot deflected off Ghislaine Conan to earn Cameroon a deserved point.

The tie means both teams have four points each from their first two games and are in a good position to progress from Group F.

Early Drama as Woodwork

It was a frantic encounter from the start and less than two minutes had passed before Conan hit the post with a cross that slipped past Cameroon goalkeeper Davies Epassi.

Cameroon had the better of the chances as the half progressed, Darlene Yongwa getting in at the far post and volleying into the side netting before Chamadeu’s cross from the right was turned goalwards by Christian Kofane, bringing out a brilliant fingertip save from Ivory Coast goalkeeper Yahya Fofana who deflected it onto the post.

Ivory Coast didn’t offer much in the way of an attacking threat in the opening period, but could have gone in front had Vacoun Bayo not headed home Diallo’s tantalizing cross from point-blank range.

The second half got off to a torrid start with both teams missing great opportunities.

First, Danny Namasso fired over the bar after the Ivory Coast defense made a mess trying to stop Brian Mbeumo’s cross from the left.

At the other end, Frank Kessey saw his volley ruled out for offside after setting up to bring down Bayou cleverly.

Amad provides calm in the midst of chaos

Kesi then deflected Namasso’s shot onto the post before the first goal of the game finally arrived through Amad’s classy touch.

The former Sunderland loanee latched on to Conan’s excellent pass, cut in and fired a brilliant left-footed shot into the corner.

The lead lasted just five minutes as Cameroon got the equalizer they deserved, albeit with a bit of luck.

The ball fell to Chamadeu on the right side of the box and his shot hit the bottom of Conan’s boot, flew into the grass and then up and over Fofana.

Kesi saw a header well saved by Epasi and at the other end Mbeumo’s free-kick from 20 yards went inches wide of the left post.
