Rangers’ remarkable actions in Ibrox last week means that they are still a lot in the equality against athletic Bilbao.

After being reduced to 10 men after the dismissal of Robin ProPer of 13 minutes for a bad challenge of Inaki Williams, Rangers kept the Basque aside the rest of the aimless meeting, thanks partly on a wonderful display by goalkeeper Liam Kelly.

Kelly was superior to being elected before Jack Butland with his crowning at the crowning moment for the late punishment by Alex Berenger.

Rangers showed his determination once again over the weekend in a 2-2 draw in Aberdeen. Ross McCauland’s red card five minutes before halftime put them on the back leg and the game looked when Aberdeen moved 2-0 four minutes later. But the second half goals by Hamza Igaman and Inis Haggie saw them claim to be 2-2 and slow down the title party for rivals of the Arch Celtic.

Athletic has had few such problems in recent weeks and cemented fourth place in La Liga with a 3-1 win over Rayo Valekano over the weekend.

Ernesto Valverde’s country has lost only one of his last 22 league games and seems to be a bet on playing football in the Champions League next season.

And the former athletic wing Ibai Gomez does not see a Rangers that causes a too much threat in San Mames – the place for this year’s Europa League final.

He said, « Athletic has to get closer to the Rangers match with maximum confidence. When you are an athletic fan, you know that in these types of nights, San Mams is usually crucial. And players also know it.

« This is a team with players who have a lot of confidence and who raised weight from their shoulders last year, winning Copa del Ray.

« Forget the fact that the finale will be in San Mams – it has nothing to do with it. It can help on the day of the finale, but until we get there, it’s just an extra motivation. It can actually be a burden because people do not appreciate the difficulty of reaching the final.

« And Rangers will be a very difficult team to play against.

« In the first game, they showed that they defend their penalties very well and the counterattack very effectively. Athletic plays a team that will not be afraid. We are facing a very difficult draw, but I hope that San Mames will be decisive. »
