Burnley ‘far from competitive’

Burnley manager Scott Parker was in a desperate move after a heavy defeat at Sunderland went 15 games in the Premier League without a win.

The Clarets were without a shot on target for the fourth time this season and are now 11 points from safety.

Burnley have conceded six goals in the opening 10 minutes of Premier League games this season, more than any other team, and Parker was furious with their lackluster performance.

He said: « Tonight we got into a tough spot that we knew and we didn’t really give ourselves a chance. The ingredients that you need coming here, the real fundamentals of the game, we didn’t get.

« It surprised me. We missed a lot tonight.

« I didn’t expect this performance, definitely where we’ve come from in terms of performance and the results we’ve achieved. We were very, very short to be competitive in this division.

« I don’t care who you play, if you’re going to fall down where we failed in terms of a lack of intent in everything we did at times – Looked passive in every phase. That’s what you have to deal with. »

Sunderland remain unbeaten at the Stadium of Light in the Premier League this season (P12 W7 D5), making it the longest unbeaten start to a top-flight campaign at home by a newly promoted side since Nottingham Forest went the entire 1977-78 campaign without losing on home soil (P21 W15 D6).

The Black Cats are one step away from European football, but manager Regis Le Bris is more concerned about ensuring safety.

The win took them to 36 points.

« We set the target earlier around 40 points, » he said.

« Maybe this season, maybe more, we don’t know. We are in the process. We will see as soon as possible to achieve this goal. If possible, we will set another one. »
