Aston Villa face Fenerbahce tomorrow. Read our in-depth review here…
says Domenico Tedesco Aston Villa are a « complete team » and believes it will take more than a passionate home crowd to knock them out of the game.
Fenerbahce Boss Tedesco, who succeeded Jose Mourinho in the role, is wary of Unai Emery’s men ahead of their Europa League clash in Istanbul tomorrow night – a must-win game for the hosts to boost their chances of a top-8 finish.
Fener have received fanatical support to register wins over Nice and Stuttgart in the league phase so far, but their Italian-born boss knows more is required against the Premier League’s high-flyers.
He said: “I think we beat Stuttgart and Nice because of the emotions, but without structure and possession we have no chance at this level.
« They’re a ball-playing team, but they have this incredible vertical approach. As soon as they get a free leg, they have two runners.
« They can play deep, press high and play on the counter-attack. They are a complete team and have worked with this coach for many years. They are a great club and they have a great coach. »
Villa has been particularly effective with his long-range shots this season, scoring 12 goals from outside the penalty area in the league.
« They have good quality to shoot from distance, » added Tedesco. « I remember a goal by (Matty) Cash, who’s always in that position, and (Morgan) Rodgers – he’s got a lot of quality. Vashi Tielemans, too.
« When you have these players, you can score from different situations. It’s not just that; they can play evenly and long. It’s very nice to watch them because they can play in different varieties. It’s not just one thing. »
Third-placed Villa are guaranteed a place in the playoffs least but will be hoping to get the win they need to secure a top eight finish.
To do so, they will need to do better than they did in Sunday’s drab 1-0 defeat at home to Everton.
Fenerbahce have two former villains in their ranks – John Duran and Marco Asensio. Duran will start after his two-game suspension was reduced to one.
New signings Matteo Guenduzi, Anthony Musaba and Mert Gounock are ineligible.
Villa midfielder Boubacar Kamara is set to miss the rest of the season while John McGinn picked up an injury against Everton.
Victor Lindelof could come in for Cash at right back.
Fenerbahce: Ederson; Semedo, Skriniar, Oosterwolde, Muldur; Fred, Yuksek, Taliska; Asensio, Duran, Akturkoglu
Aston Villa: Martinez; Lindelof, Konsa, Torres, Dine; Bogarde, Tielemans; Gessan, Rodgers, Sancho; Watkins
Fenerbahçe v Aston Villa kicks off tomorrow at 17:45 UK time. The match will be broadcast live in the UK on TNT Sports.
