Rangers manager Russell Martin defended his decision to launch two key bench players, as Scottish giants made a significant step towards the Champions League playoffs with a 3-0 victory over the Czech side Victoria Plzen.
Djeidi Gassama collected a bracelet and Cyriel Desers sent a penalty as a ranger Cruise to a comfortable third qualifying victory from the first leg in IBROXS
But the big news before the launch was Martin’s decision, who blew up his players after a 1-1 draw in Maumwell on Saturday to remove Captain James Tavernie and Nico Raskin from the initial eleven.
The decision seems to be paid, with Martin’s country created a dominant display before the second Pilsen match next week.
And the new Rangers boss supported his decision, insisting that he would need everyone in the team to play his role.
« I don’t like the word dropped, » Martin told the BBC Sport after the match.
« I told the boys before that you are not falling from the team. We will need everyone (in the team). People will come out, we need freshness.
« You, as a head coach, have to do what is best for the team at night. The boys who have appeared brilliantly and that’s all you can ask for.
« There is a tendency here that one thing is turning into a big thing, but it’s not at all. Tonight was the best team.
« I don’t think this will be the same eleven weeks of the week. »
If the titles before the match largely refer to the longtime players of the club, the focus after the game will probably be on the fresh faces in IBROX.
Gasama, who signed from Sheffield on Wednesday in the summer, now scored in three consecutive European matches, while there was an excellent performance by the 23-year-old debutant Oliver Antman.
The Finnish youth provided the assist for Gasama’s second and seemed to be a constant threat on the right side of Rangers.
Martin was pleased with the contribution of his two new signatures, but also praised the whole team for displaying them.
« I’m really pleased with a lot of this (the game), » Martin said.
« I was a little annoyed with the last 15 minutes, as I thought we were a little too sloping and had the ball too much in my own half. But my job is to take for the boys.
« It’s really hard to try to learn a lot of details and apply it with the right intensity and courage, especially after a difficult afternoon on Saturday (against Motherwell). So I’m really proud of the team. »
