This first pour is your chance to make sure the wine has not gotten bad. Sometimes the bottles can break especially if they have been stored incorrectly or have a defective cork and the result is something called « cork » wine. It can smell a torture, like a wet cardboard or mildew, and it will definitely not taste like what the winemaker has intended. Providing wine quickly sniffing before you drink, helps you catch any problems before the bottle is completely poured, saving your palate and night.
Therefore, you don’t even have to drink the wine, but it’s good if you do. If you want to show that you are a wine drinker, but just, just give it a big turn, since a bad bottle is usually found only by the smell. But this flexible is only valuable if you know how to blow a bad bottle.
Approximately 1% to 7% of the bottles are a cork – we will explain what it means below. Knowing what to look like, you taste and smell is crucial when checking the wine for problems. To get the full spoon of cork wine and how to tell a good bottle of bad, we turned to the experts. Here’s all you need to know.
« Cork wine is caused by a compound called Trichloroanisole, or TCA, which pollutes cork, bottle or wine while harvesting, production or even shipping, » says Vinnie Milia, head of the famous Waldorf Astoria Chicago.
CORK wine can come from a wine cellar restaurant or your own collection.
TCA often exists as fungi in plugs, but can also be presented in pesticides, preservatives and cleaning products found in wineries. Barrels and cardboard boxes can also be sources of « pollution », even if high quality control standards are strictly applied.
« CORK wine is not harmful to consumption, but it is certainly not pleasant to drink and it will definitely make the experience worse, » Miliano said.
Despite the temporary inconvenience and interruption of dinner service, it is a good idea to send something back that does not taste. After all, if you are firing hard earned money to get you a loved one, you don’t want to go in the evening, well, acidicS
We asked Miliano, as well as Courtney Cheney, the manager of beverage operations for Ocean Prime, to explain how to find out if a wine is a corker and the correct protocol to mark the problem with a sommelier or server. (For more wine tips, read the best tips of sommelier to find budget bottles and see how to properly store each type of open wine.)
Ciffine wine can smell like a wet cardboard or moist basement.
There are usually two direct indicators to find out if wine is a cork: aroma and taste. « Crock wine usually smells, with flavors of wet cardboard, muddy or like a damp basement, » Miliano said. « If you try it, you will notice that the taste can be muted or unpleasant, lacking the expected fruits and structure. »
Cheney sounds these accurate descriptions, adding that a cork wine will also taste « flat with a pronounced strength in severe cases that will also lack fertility ».
And while one may believe that some heavy varieties are more likely to bones than others, TCA does not discriminate against. « It is easier, however, to recognize the cork enchanting in wines, which are stationary due to the powerful aromas that accompany oak aging, » Cheney said. « It is more likely to appear in guilt with traditional plugs. »

Do not be ashamed to send a cork bottle of wine back.
If you run into a cork bottle, a trained wine professional or bar manager is likely to eliminate the unfortunate circumstance. « The best approach is the simplest, » Miliano said. « Inform your server or sommelier politely. There will be no insult and most hospitality professionals are trained to handle the situation gracefully. »
This may include wine tasting before replacing the bottle or glass. If you are not quite sure, you can also rely on their expert palate for explanation and/or final confirmation.
« Once I had a whole case of a wonderful Rihdzh completely attached, » said Miliano, who also says that there is no need to « feel embarrassed or angry at the moment. » Quality verification is only part of the process and an important step in determining whether additional equipment is affected.
« You can also check the cork that should be introduced to your server opening the bottle, » Cheney added. « If it smells of painful and dumb, it is probably attached. » Of course, if there is any kind of discounts, escalate higher for restaurant managers or owners after your meal. This can be done by email to avoid confrontation.
