Mikel Arteta admitted his Arsenal the team should be more clinical once they narrowly beat bottom club Wolves 2-1 at the Emirates thanks to an own goal in the 94th minute.
Jerson Mosquera headed a cross into his own goal just minutes after Tolu Arokodare had nodded in what the away fans felt was a late equaliser.
Sam Johnstone’s own goal from Bukayo Saka’s corner had earlier given the Gunners the lead on a largely disappointing night for the Premier League leaders, who faced a spirited Wolves side.
The result moves Arteta’s men five points clear of second-placed Manchester City, who can cut that gap to two with a win over Crystal Palace on Sunday.
Despite the dramatic end to the match, however, the Arsenal boss was honest in his assessment of his team’s performance.
« We knew it was going to be a difficult game, especially because we didn’t score at the beginning of the game, » Arteta told TNT Sports.
« We did a bit better in the second half, we managed to score, but then we had a period of three minutes, so passive, really bad defensive habits. It’s not acceptable for us at this level because we haven’t conceded a single shot up to that point.
« The first time they do it, they score. This is the Premier League and we have to be aware of that and improve.
« We had a lot of situations where we didn’t pick the right player in the last pass, when we have congestion in the box and hit the first man. That’s not the standard. »
However, Arteta admitted that victory in this manner would give his players a boost ahead of a busy festive calendar that could determine their title credentials.
« It always gives you faith that you can always find a solution, » Arteta said.
« Now we’ll have a clean week and then we’ll go again because over the Christmas period we know what’s going on. »
Next up for Arsenal is a trip to the Hill Dickinson Stadium to face Everton on Saturday night.
