Back in Champions League after a season outside European competition, Newcastle are playing continental knockout football for the first time since reaching the quarter-finals of the Europa League in 2012/13.

The Magpies finished in the fifth and final position in the qualifiers Premier League on goal difference and earned a trip to reigning European champions Paris Saint-Germain, as well as visits to Spanish title holders Barcelona and their Dutch counterpart PSV.

Newcastle finished fourth in the group stage in 2023/24, despite picking up four points from meetings with PSG this campaign.

Newcastle’s opponents in the league phase included reigning Belgian champions Union Saint-Giloise and last season’s runners-up in Portugal, France and Germany: Benfica, Marseille and Leverkusen.

Athletic Club finished fourth in Spain and Newcastle’s meeting with Leverkusen comes more than 22 years after the only previous two meetings between the clubs came in the 2002/03 Champions League.

Newcastle won 3-1 home and away against Die Werkself, including a first-half hat-trick for the club’s all-time top scorer Alan Shearer at St James’ Park.

English teams in the Champions League: Why are there six clubs?

Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea and Newcastle ranked as the top five teams in the Premier League.

There were five places for English teams, as the additional positions are awarded according to the UEFA coefficient rankings, which are based on the nations’ overall performance in European competition for a season.

Spurs qualify as Europa League champions, although they lost 22 and won just 11 of their 2024/25 league games and finished 17th.
