Jarrod Bowen said West Ham’s « deserved » win over Newcastle was « a long time coming » and insisted all players want to « change the situation we’re in ».
The Hammers won just their second game of the season and first since August, coming from behind to win 3-1 thanks to goals from Lucas Paquette, an own goal from Sven Botman and a stoppage-time effort from Tomas Soucek.
The win ended a seven-match winless run and a first home win since February and Bowen was happy to get that winning feeling back at the London Stadium.
West Ham captain Bowen told Sky Sports: « It’s been a long time. We know we weren’t good enough at home and we wanted to change that.
« Sometimes you think your luck is against you and that’s never going to change, but we hung in there. I don’t think we did anything different in terms of preparation. We as players understand the situation we’re in and we want to change that.
« Different things were going against us, the standards were going against us and defending our goal. This time we deserved the win in the end. »
Midfielder Freddie Potts came on for his first start for the Hammers and was hugely impressive. The 22-year-old said the players had stuck together during the difficult run and said the winning comeback proved the character in the squad.
Potts told BBC 5 Live: « I wanted to come here and win. I wasn’t even thinking about anything with man of the match. Now it’s something to build on – we’ve got a great chance of getting another three points next weekend.
« There’s something about this week – we were really together. We knew when the first goal went down we had to bounce back and show the fans we had character.
« There’s a lot of noise outside, it’s so important to stay together. »
Manager Nuno Espirito Santo said winning for the first time as West Ham boss « feels really good » and said he was determined to ensure it was the start of a turnaround in fortunes for the club.
He said: « I feel very good. We are happy and proud of the way we played the game.
« That was the feeling, but the boys did amazing and the reaction of the team was incredible. We had a lot of chances against us. Fantastic reaction.
« It means a lot to us, but nothing is done. We have a lot of work to do and we will start the week trying to improve. »
Speaking on Match of the Day, he added: “The players realize that to win in the Premier League we have to work very hard.
« We’ll do it again. Winning makes it easier, there are smiles and the legs feel easier.
« We’re seeing slight improvements on the field. We need to create a platform on the field. »
