London-based hardware company Nothing is on track to release a pair of smart glasses next year, Bloomberg reported, citing anonymous sources.
The glasses will likely feature cameras, microphones and speakers, and connect to a smartphone and the cloud to process AI requests, the report said.
CEO and co-founder Carl Pei initially resisted the idea of smart glasses, but has since told employees he wants to focus on a multi-device strategy, expanding the company’s mission beyond its existing lines of smartphones and audio equipment, Bloomberg said.
The company also plans to launch a pair of AI-enabled headphones this year. Last year, Pei told TechCrunch that he plans to launch his first AI device in 2026, though he didn’t specify what kind of device it might be.
If the report is true, nothing will stand against Meta, Even Realities, and Rokid, all of whom make smart glasses. Meta has released multiple versions of its smart glasses so far, and earlier this week showed off two models that support prescription lenses. Apple is rumored to release a pair of smart glasses next year, and Google and Samsung smart glasses will land this year.
Nothing turned into a unicorn last year after raising $200 million in Series C at a $1.3 billion valuation. The company is popular among technology enthusiasts thanks to its unique design, which often includes transparent and transparent elements. However, it still represents only a small share of the smartphone market, which has long been dominated by incumbents Apple, Samsung, several Chinese companies and Google itself.
Pei has repeatedly said that Nothing will need to innovate on the hardware and software fronts and use AI to stand out in the market. Last year, the company released a tool that lets people create mini apps using AI prompts.
