OpenAI offers free access to ChatGPT Plus to help veterans transition into the workforce

Artificial intelligence giant OpenAI announced a new initiative on Monday to make it easier soldiers and veterans use artificial intelligence tools as they transition from military service to the workforce.

The ChatGPT factor announced that service members within 12 months of discharge or retirement, or any veteran in their first year of military service, can use ChatGPT Plus, the company’s subscription-based tool, for free for one year.

Katrina Mulligan, director of national security partnerships at OpenAI for Government, told reporters that the initiative will give participants access to the company’s latest models and more than 100 sample chats written by OpenAI veterans based on real transition missions. They can also access an OpenAI veteran-made introductory video tailored for service members and veterans, as well as deployment support through the OpenAI Academy.

« Our mission at OpenAI is to ensure that AI tools are widely available and useful, and that includes the men and women who have served our country, » Mulligan said. « We know that nearly 70% of veterans say getting a job is the biggest challenge, and we want to make the transition a little easier by offering support that’s available at any time – whether it’s writing a CV, practicing interview questions or planning next steps. »

Retired General Paul Nakasone, a board member of OpenAI, said after experiencing the transition from the service 15 months ago that it provides an opportunity to learn new ways of speaking, dressing and translate military skills for the workforce of 200,000 employed persons who transfer to the private sector each year.

He noted the examples of the GI Bill that began during World War II and the veteran-oriented technology that emerged from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq this century as ways the nation has supported veterans, adding that OpenAI sees this initiative as a new form of aid.

« OpenAI believes very, very strongly that this type of assistance needs to continue. In today’s world where artificial intelligence is really a driver of how we do our finances, it’s so important that our veterans have the ability to leverage the ideas and insights our platform provides,” said Nakasone.

Vikki Lampton, an Army veteran and director of recruiting for OpenAI Robotics, said that using OpenAI has made her think about her. transition from the military in 2013 and wondered how different it would have been had he had access to an AI tool back then.

« When I started mentoring other transitioning veterans, I showed them how to use ChatGPT to translate their military experience into civilian terms and understand their benefits, get their paperwork done, prepare for interviews, or even explore starting their own business, » Lampton said. « What stood out was how quickly they adopted it and how much more confident they felt after having something to help them transition on their own terms. »

Troy Peterson, technical program manager at OpenAI and a military veteran, added that the OpenAI team « designed these resources around the real challenges we and other veterans face, and we’re proud to share this with the wider community. »

Peterson said that transition from the military civilian workforce can be scary because « Veterans have skills and experience, but not always the tools to explain them or plan these next steps. »

« The program really evolved from our experiences volunteering with transitioning veterans and how ChatGPT worked as a power booster. Time and time again, vets have told us, ‘I had no idea I could use it for that,' » Peterson said.

He added that he used ChatGPT to interview for OpenAI and that the tool has become more powerful in recent years, saying the company is « really proud of how veterans and supporters around the company have come together to make this idea happen. »
