England captain Harry Brooke said his side were « challenged » in « a lot of different departments » after losing to Sri Lanka by 19 runs in the first one-day international in Colombo.

Kusal Mendis scored 93 as England were 272 for victory at the R Premadasa Stadium, where Ben Duckett replied with 62 and Joe Root scored 61 to give Brooke’s side hope.

Brook’s was one of eight wickets to fall for 84 runs, with Jamie Overton’s dismissal during a final chase of 20 handing his side an 11th consecutive away ODI defeat.

« We batted really well through the middle and the spinners batted extremely well, » Brook told TNT Sports after watching Adil Rashid take 3-44.

« They caught us in the last over. They challenged us in a lot of different departments. Unfortunately we lost a couple of wickets in quick succession and that always puts you on the back foot. »

The three-match series continues under the same circumstances on Saturday c of England second match after their 4-1 series loss in Australia.
