Rory McIlroy has ‘much more to achieve’ after being named Sports Personality of the Year

Rory McIlroy insisted there was still more he wanted to achieve after being named Sports Personality of the Year, capping off what he described as an « amazing » 2025.

The Northern Irishman was honored at Thursday’s ceremony in Salford after a year in which he finally finished his golf career Big helmet.

McIlroy became just the sixth man to achieve the feat when he won the Masters in April, holding his nerve in a dramatic finish at Augusta National.

« I don’t know what I’m going to do in 2026 to beat him, but I’m going to try, » McIlroy said BBC Sport IN.

« I’m having a bit of a nice break over Christmas and New Year and I think that’s the time to put the highlights down and watch them again and reflect.

« It’s been an amazing 12 months and I want to enjoy everything I’ve done, but at the same time it’s not about me – there’s so much more I want to achieve. »

At 36, McIlroy finally claimed the green jacket that had eluded him for more than a decade. His Masters triumph came 14 years after his painful collapse at Augusta in 2011, when he led by four shots going into the final round. This time he prevailed in the playoff after being pushed all the way by Ryder Cup teammate Justin Rose.

This victory put McIlroy alongside Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods as the only players to win all four majors during their careers.

His success didn’t stop there. McIlroy also played a central role in the Ryder Cup victory in Europe in September, contributing three-and-a-half points as the team secured its first victory on American soil since 2012.

He won a seventh Race to Dubai title, fourth in a row, leaving him just one short of Colin Montgomery’s European Tour record.

Asked if he was eyeing Montgomery’s mark in 2026, McIlroy made it clear the motivation remains as strong as ever.

« I’d love to try it. I still feel like I’ve got a good few years in me. Knock on wood, I’ve been injury free.

“I’ve been on tour for half my life – 18 years – but I still have the enthusiasm for the game.

« Majors, more Ryder Cups, that’s all great, but as Tommy (Fleetwood) said, as long as you feel you still have that drive to keep getting better, that’s the most important thing. »

McIlroy received the Sports Personality of the Year award alongside his close friend Fleetwood, with the pair also representing Europe as they were awarded Team of the Year following their Ryder Cup success.
