SGLA testifies before Massachusetts committee on

The Social Gaming Leadership Alliance (SGLA) this week (November 13) testified before a committee in Massachusetts about a bill that contains provisions that could see Social Plus games banned in the Commonwealth.

Just the other day, the alliance announced the introduction of « Social Plus, » which they say is a new term that defines the category of free-to-play social games provided by SGLA partners. They describe it as online social gaming with lottery promotions that « brings interactive board, card and casino-style games to millions of Americans. »

The online casino bill, H.4431, was referred to the Committee on Economic Development and Emerging Technologies. As of now, nothing has been done yet, as the commission will take written testimony until November 20.

In evidence to the committee, Sean Ostrow, SGLA’s managing director, urged them to consider an alternative approach that would « pay dividends to the Commonwealth for years to come by regulating and taxing Social Plus gaming ».

The committee will report on Massachusetts bill H.4431 next month

The organization believes allowing the « booming » industry to continue will generate new revenue for the Bay State. The SGLA also suggests voters oppose the potential ban.

« A recent national survey by Seven Letter Insight found that 84% of US voters support modernizing laws to regulate and tax Social Plus online gaming. Only 8% think gaming should be banned, and only 4% say this issue should be a priority over concerns such as inflation, health care and housing, » an SGLA article said.

The commission, which hears both sides of the dispute, has until December 17 to prepare a report.

« SGLA stands behind strong regulation and consumer protection, responsible adult-only social gaming, fair taxation and enabling economic development here in the Commonwealth, » Ostrow said. « We look forward to working with the members of this committee to achieve these mutually beneficial outcomes. »
