Slot admits Reds need to ‘face up where we are’ after Champions League shock

Liverpool manager Arne Slott admits his side must ‘meet where we are’ after 4-1 Champions League defeat by PSV at Anfield which condemned the Reds to their ninth defeat in 12 games in all competitions.

Slott’s side had hoped to bounce back from a 3-0 win at Nottingham Forest on Saturday but instead suffered more misfortune as an early penalty from Ivan Perisic, followed by a goal from Guus Till and a second-half brace from Kuhaib Driusz, left Liverpool on their worst run of results for more than 70 years.

Dominic Soboslay equalized before the break, but clinical finishing from the visitors and red-hot defending from Liverpool ensured it was a night to forget for the hosts.

The result piles further pressure on Slott and the Liverpool boss admitted the defeat was hard to take.

« Every time the question is the same, the emotions are very negative and disappointing, » Slott told TNT Sports.

« The way we conceded 1-0, I want to be positive about the reaction of the players to lose 1-0. We played a very good game until half-time. I don’t think anyone would have expected us to lose this game 4-1.

« After half-time we conceded quite early. We had a few more good chances to make it 2-2, but 10-15 minutes before the end we conceded another goal.

« It’s hard to take. After conceding the first one, we saw the reaction I want to see and it’s not easy because we had a big loss at the weekend (against Nottingham Forest). It’s another big loss. »

However, Slot chose to remain positive, urging his players to « fight really hard » to get their season back on track.

« The only way to pass is to pass now, » Slott said.

« Get up where we are, fight really hard. »

Next up for the Reds is a trip to the London Stadium to face West Ham on Sunday.
