Slott says Real Madrid ‘get the best’ from their Liverpool players after Champions League win

Liverpool manager Arne Slott said the game against Real Madrid « brings the best » out of his players after the Reds put in an impressive performance on beat Los Blancos 1-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s first trip to Anfield since leaving the club he joined as a boy dominates pre-match talkbut Alexis McAllister eventually grabbed the headlines, scoring the only goal of the game on the hour mark from Dominik Soboslay’s free-kick.

The result perhaps flattered visitors Spain, who had goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to thank after the Belgian produced a series of superb saves in both halves to prevent an even bigger goal.

The win was important for Arne Slott and his players. It was the first time they had won back-to-back since September and ensured they move into the top 6 of the Champions League table.

Of the result, Slott said: « (I’m) very pleased. It’s been a tough couple of weeks for us. Lots of away games, hardly any rest between games.

“But it helps when you can play in front of those fans and against (Real) Madrid because it brings out the best I think in my players.

« (It was) a great performance against a team that has lost once this season. It could have been a bit more but he (Courtois) made a couple of saves close to it and he’s one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

« I said before the game that they (Real) have scored 26 goals in La Liga and (Kylian) Mbappe and Vinicius (Jr) have 24 goals together. So if you want to have any chance of winning this game, you have to make sure those two are not on the scoresheet. The whole team defended really well. »

Slott admitted that his side have struggled when facing teams with different playing philosophies, but added that his side « have to make sure that against whatever style of play we come up against, we can win the game ».

The Reds boss also reflected on the criticism that came after the run of six defeats in seven games in all competitions.

« It’s better if you win games than if you lose them as a manager, » Slott said.

“Life as a manager if you lose is not the best thing because it just takes up all your time because you want to change it so much.

“But you also try to be the same person, the same manager, that you are when you’re winning.

« Everyone has an opinion – sometimes right, sometimes wrong. All I can do is tell them (the players) my opinion, hoping it’s strong enough for them to believe me.

« We have dropped too many points in the Premier League. We have to do better and that is what we will try. There are many more games to show that. »

Next up for Liverpool is a trip to the Etihad to face Manchester City on Sunday.
