Week 7 of the NFL season ends in style as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (5-1) travel to Ford Field to face the Detroit Lions (4-2) in a Monday Night Football clash.
This matchup pits one of the hottest quarterbacks in the league against a Detroit defense that has struggled to stay healthy.
The result could have lasting implications for the postseason standings — and maybe even the MVP race.
Few players in the NFL have been able to silence critics this season like Baker Mayfield. The Buccaneers quarterback has rediscovered his rhythm, throwing for 12 touchdowns to just one interception in six games while leading Tampa Bay to a 5-1 record.
But Detroit’s defense — while talented — enters Monday night depleted. The Lions will be without defensive end Brian Branch, who is serving a one-game suspension, while several other key defensive backs are either battling injuries or remaining on injured reserve.
That could cause problems against an in-form quarterback and a rushing attack eager to exploit mismatches downfield.
Tampa Bay isn’t completely healthy either, though. Rookie Emeka Egbuka and veteran Chris Godwin are nursing, although star Mike Evans returned to training this week in a limited capacity.
This primetime matchup carries a lot of weight in the NFC playoffs. A win for the Buccaneers would move them closer to securing first place and establish Mayfield as a legitimate MVP contender.
Meanwhile, a Lions win would have snapped the momentum of one of the hottest teams in the conference and kept Detroit firmly in the NFC North crown chase.
Offensively, Jared Goff will look to rebuild Detroit’s offense after a disappointing showing in Kansas City. Prior to that loss, the Lions had averaged over 40 points per game during a dominant four-game winning streak – and haven’t lost back-to-back games since 2022. #
If Goff can establish a rhythm early, especially with healthy Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameer Gibbs, Detroit has the firepower to handle Mayfield blow-for-blow.
