The January jobs report was delayed due to the government shutdown

The partial government shutdown that started on Saturday morning is delaying the publication of the publication January jobs report which was supposed to be released this week.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics said Monday that the January jobs report, originally scheduled for release Friday, will be delayed until after the shutdown ends with government funding restored.

« The release will be rescheduled when state funding resumes, » Emily Liddel, BLS deputy commissioner, said in a statement. « Once funding is restored, BLS will resume normal operations and will notify the public of any changes to the press release schedule on the BLS publication calendar. »

Federal agencies lay off unnecessary workers during a government shutdownwhich, in the case of the BLS, affects employees whose job it is to collect data and prepare financial reports, such as the monthly jobs report.

Recent economic data was marred by the previous government shutdown, which lasted 43 days from the start of the government’s fiscal year on October 1 to mid-November, when Congress reached a bipartisan agreement to end the longest government shutdown in US history.

The previous shutdown affected several closely watched economic releases, with the September jobs report delayed from the first week of October to November 20.
