England head coach Thomas Tuchel reflects on his team’s world championship group after overseeing a perfect qualifying campaign that saw eight wins from eight without conceding a goal.
England will stand up 2018 runners-up Croatia, Panama and Ghana in Group L next summer.
Speaking after the draw in Washington, head coach Thomas Tuchel said: “Tough group, tough opening.
« Croatia and Ghana (are) two regulars at World Cups and two proud and strong nations. I don’t know much about Panama at the moment, but we will know before the tournament starts.
« For me, I’ve only experienced group football in Champions League formats and the way I approached it was to always give it the utmost respect and put all the focus on winning the group.
« It always looks difficult, like our group now, but we are confident and will be well prepared when we arrive. »
Croatia was the strongest possible opponent that England could draw from pot two and they are the team that beat England in the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup.
England last met Panama in the same tournament, winning 6-1 in the group stage.
They managed to avoid games from the likes of Scotland and Norway, but the Croatians will pose a serious threat to one of the favourites.
Tuchel emphasized that every team is a threat. He said: « No one should be underestimated. Of course, Croatia is the standout nation, but Ghana is always full of talent, can always surprise and has a big history at the World Cup.
« Panama will try to make the most of their underdog role. No one can be underestimated, everyone deserves full respect. »
