FOX Business Jeff Flock joins Mornings with Maria to report on America’s first graphite mine in decades and the effort to reduce America’s dependence on China for critical minerals.
A quiet recovery is underway State of New Yorkwhich highlights a major shift in America’s industrial and national security priorities.
Titan Mining has begun processing the first newly produced U.S. graphite since the 1950s, turning the ordinary-looking rock into a material now considered essential for everything from advanced batteries to modern weapons systems.
For most people, graphite brings to mind pencils. However, it has become the backbone energy and defense economy. The mineral is a key component in lithium-ion batteries that power electric vehicles, drones, communications equipment and military equipment. It is also used in nuclear reactors, missiles, and high-temperature industrial applications, giving it a large role in both everyday technology and national defense.
For decades, Stateside has allowed its graphite supply chain to slowly move offshore. Today, all US graphite is imported, with about 42% coming from our biggest rival, China. Dependence on one foreign supplier has turned graphite from a supporting mineral to a growing one a national security concern As competition between the United States and China intensifies.
GM Defense President Steve duMont joins « Varney & Co. » cut off America’s race to build the first heavy rare-earth refinery, the growing threat of Chinese supply cuts, and urgent pressure to secure materials critical to U.S. military power.

Titan Mining CEO Rita Adiani referred to these risks directly.
« …That’s why it’s a very unique proposition to be a domestic producer because it’s a national security issue, » Adiani said.
These pressures have fueled a growing political response in Washington. below National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), federal agencies have strict restrictions on acquiring critical material from foreign adversaries. This puts domestic graphite projects like Titan directly in the spotlight.
« …Under the NDAA there are strict restrictions on acquisitions and again that’s why we play a very important role, » Adiani said.
Adiani emphasized how unexpected discoveries can change the country’s resource map.
« So we have a mineral rights package of 120,000 hectares. We went looking for zinc and found graphite, » he said.
He explained how the raw stone is turned into a very clean material on site.
« So what you’re looking at here is mined rock that we get out of the ground. We take that and concentrate it into very high concentrations of graphite… The flotation circle you see here is about 95-99% graphite. »

As Washington tightens procurement rules and US industry seeks safety stable supplies, graphite is moving from a niche material to a strategic resource. The reopening of US production adds a new chapter to rebuilding supply chains.
