In the past, I spoke in the past (here and here) about the concept of whether there is a point beyond which the exercise is getting too good. As I am always tempted to press the envelope on this issue, I decided to ask Google Gemini Deep Research to study it: the volume of endurance, intensity and longevity exercises. He went out with this reportwhich is summarized in this podcast derived from the report. This is an interesting update. In the past, some studies seem to show a « U-shaped curve » for longevity relative to the volume of exercise: Exercise reduces the mortality of all causes, with the benefit increasing with more exercise to a point. Then the risk of mortality increases again. However, this is not born in the meta-analysis of most studies. Instead, the mortality rate for all causes continues to decrease, no matter how much you exercise. But beyond some point, we are at a higher risk of developing certain cardiac abnormalities such as AFIB or heart scars. This seems to be more likely for those who do a lot of high -intensity workouts.
So, if you are like me and enjoying a lot of endurance workouts, it is a good idea to follow a system such as polarized training, where the greater part of your training is of easy intensity, with a minority of higher intensity training. Other recommendations are also given in report as a possible cardiac screening to minimize the risk of heart abnormalities. As in the past I had a replacement of the heart valve, I am under the continuing care of a cardiologist and I am glad to check periodically.
