The United Nations Research Institute has created AI Refugee Avatar

A research institute related to the United Nations organization has created two AVs driven by AI designed to learn people on refugee problems.

404 The media wrote about an experiment conducted by a class at the University Center for Political Research of the United Nations, which led to the creation of two agents or avators of AI – an amin, a fictional woman who fled Sudan and lives in a refugee camp in Chad and Abdala, a fictional soldier with a rapid force.

It is assumed that users will be able to talk to the Amin and Abdal on the experiment website, even though I received an error message when I tried to sign up on Saturday afternoon.

Eduardo Albrecht, a professor in Colombia and a senior associate at UNU-CPR, told 404 media outlets that he and his students « just play with the concept » and do not offer this as a UN decision.

A document summarizing this work suggests that these avatars can ultimately be used « to quickly do the donors. » However, he also noted that many participants in the seminar who have interacted with the agents have reacted negatively, for example, saying that refugees are « very capable of talking about themselves in real life. »
