“Oz wizard” blown up by AI for a giant screen on screen

The massive place in Las Vegas, known as a sphere, will project its first classic movie, The Wizard of Oz, starting on August 28. And as described in detail in the CBS segment on Sunday morning, this is not just a question to take the existing movie and design it at 160,000 square feet in a sphere, LED screen.

Instead, Sphere Entertainment CEO James Dolan said a 2000 team was creating a new experience. This includes the use of AI to increase the resolution of the existing film and expand the frames beyond the frame of what is actually shot.

For example, the representative of the Turner Ben Mankiewicz film films said that, with the use of AI, « a granular close-up of Dorothy becomes richly detailed, and then through a process called pouring-mom that we look like magic, we see the rest of the scarecrow, the yellow brick road and the mountains of the OZ. »

In other cases, the expansion of the frame means creating new performances by existing participants.

Despite these changes, Dolan said, « Our standard for this was not to change the movie at all, but to try to get you into the movie as if you were in the studio when he was filmed. »
