« Night of the Reaper » is a retro babysitter of a mysterious twist

Harvest It starts with a familiar script for the slope movie: a babysitter lurking by a killer. The masked threat puts a big show to play with her, leaving fearsome notes that almost feel like a joke until the danger becomes too real.

This is a strange opening sequence that signals the director and co-director Brandon Christensen (Though/native, z) is well acquainted with the horrors of the tropes in which his film bends – and you can say that he knows that his audience will take them too.

HarvestThe main reference point is, obviously, HalloweenThe motherhood of all the horror movies of babysitters. It was placed in the early 1980s – the era of Pat Bennar Bangers on MTV – a little later since 1978. HalloweenS But advancing a few years means access to a slightly more sophisticated technology, especially with camcorders, a key storyline, as well as stylistic impact. Board loans are missed with static « tracking » lines, and VHS cartridges are important all the time.

The main events of the film appear some time after the death of the babysitter. We meet the main character Dina (Gen v« Jessica Clement) as she walks down a quiet street entitled with Halloween decorations; the electronic result further emphasizes the comparisons of Laurie Strode. The House of Diena from College, which has to have what is obviously intense with her parents. When her high school, who still lives in her home To watch the young son of the local sheriff for the night.

Here again, the viewer may assume – and indeed, Harvest It seems to be creating a similar fate for Dine as the girl in the opening scene. But there is also a parallel storyline that must be relaxed, as sheriff Arnold (Ryan Robins) begins to receive packages that lead him to hunt a cleaner.

It seems more than possible that whoever killed the girl in the opening to return for more mockery. Arnold notes at one point: « Someone is trying to tell me something. » But exactly what is this message (and who sends it) HarvestThe central mystery.

AS Harvest It progresses, tension and horror are built in both stories. Dina’s concert, watching little Max (Max Christensen), turns from a playful game of hiding place and escalation of terror, as the doors slowly creak, the objects are rearranged by invisible hands and the shady figure lurks in the forest right beyond the yard.

Meanwhile, sheriff Arnold is freely involved in some unprofessional behavior of the jaw, as he puzzles a series of clues, especially after realizing that the cold case of the babysitter is not the only crime on the table. In the recent past, there are also hints of another death that is much smoother for him.

To share more about the plot twists that follow would compromise much of what it does Harvest Nice but not a spoiler to say, Devil’s home territory.

Halloween is the main influence here, but the horror of found-Footage also makes its mark as well as other Slasher series, including ScreamS If the finale reveals a little too talking, as Christensen is in a hurry to explain everything that comes before, you need to appreciate the efforts to fill in as many preparations as possible.

Acting performances come from Clement as the resourceful Din, as well as the summer H. Howel – to be considered soon as Carrie White in Mike Flanagan Carrie Series – which makes the most of its short screen time as the first victim.

Harvest Trembling streams today, September 19.
