Former West Ham boss Graham Potter is open to a job in Sweden

Former West Ham, Chelsea and Brighton manager Graham Potter has expressed an interest in becoming head coach of Sweden’s national team, admitting it « would be a fantastic opportunity ».

Jon Dahl Thomasson was relieved of his duties as Sweden coach on Tuesday following the team’s poor start to their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.

The Scandinavian nation are currently in last place in Group B, having taken just one point from four matches.

Potter, who spent seven years as manager of Sweden’s Östersunds before landing jobs in the English top flight and Championship, was sacked by West Ham last month after just eight months in charge.

Potter led Östersunds to three promotions and a Svenska Cupen triumph, as well as leading the club to the knockout stages of the 2017/18 Europa League.

And the 50-year-old seemed open to the idea of ​​returning to the country where he enjoyed great success.

Speaking to Swedish outlet Fotbollskanalen, Potter said: “I’m actually in Sweden at the moment, in my house in Sweden.

“I’m between jobs and I’ve just left the Premier League.

« I’m really open to anything where I feel I can help. The job as head coach of the Swedish national team is fantastic.

« I have feelings for Sweden. I love the country and Swedish football. I have a lot to be grateful to Swedish football for.

« So yeah, it would be a fantastic opportunity for me, obviously. »

With two matches remaining in the World Cup qualifying groups, Sweden are on the brink of elimination.

Despite boasting the likes of Alexander Isak and Viktor Gokeres in their ranks, they are six points adrift of second-placed Kosovo and so, barring a remarkable string of results, will not feature in next summer’s showpiece.
