Former Barcelona striker Christophe Dugarry has described Vinicius Jr as « unbearable » and believes he will be sold by Real Madrid.
The Brazilian winger was a central figure in the 2-1 Clasico win over Barcelona on Sundayalbeit for the wrong reasons.
He drew the ire of Madrid fans for his angry reaction to being substituted in the 72nd minute, voicing his displeasure – including saying « I’m leaving this team » – in a very public display of displeasure at coach Xabi Alonso before storming the tunnel.
When he returned, he was involved in the post-match scandals in which several Madrid players targeted Lamin Yamal, who had made inflammatory remarks before the match for the capital club.
Dugarry was enthusiastic about the performance of fellow Frenchman Kylian Mbappe, who opened the scoring and was a constant threat to Barcelona’s defence, but had only criticism for Vinicius Jr.
He said: « I liked Mbappe’s game, both his attitude and his behavior. Unlike Vinicius, who is unbearable. He always complains about the referee and his opponents. Now he doesn’t respect his coach. »
Vinicius Jr has struggled to replicate his best form of the past 12 months – since losing out to Manchester City midfielder Rodri in the 2024 Ballon d’Or voting.
Dugarry, who made seven appearances for Barca in the 1997-98 season and won 55 caps for France, added: « You can be disappointed (to be sent off) but it’s going too far. Go away man, your performance is not up to par.
« It worries me, he cries non-stop, always wants something. He is still far from his level of the last seasons. He was a future Ballon d’Or, leader of Brazil, one of the best in Real Madrid. He has to prove something more if he wants to return to the same level.
(Real Madrid president) Florentino Perez will get rid of him.
However, Vinicius Jr. received words of support from one of his former teammates.
Toni Kroos, who retired last year after a glittering career at the Bernabeu, said: « When you play an outstanding game, especially a game like this, you’re not happy (to be substituted) in the least. I’ve never liked being substituted either, although to be honest, I’ve never gone to the dressing room straight away after being taken off. »
« It’s easy to judge from the outside. I mean, in reality, those who are down there in the Clasico, in front of 80,000 spectators and with the score 2-1, want anything but to go out. Nobody can judge and imagine that emotion. »
Alonso confirmed after the game that he would discuss Vinicius’ reaction with the player, but Kroos believes the coach will be very understanding.
« Anger can be contained a little longer, » added the former Germany international midfielder.
« I understand his anger, but as you can see in the images, it’s not conveyed in the ideal way. However, I want to point out that it’s an emotionally extreme situation to be down there in a game like that. I’ve been through it many times, so you don’t always have to take everything so seriously. Coaches usually don’t either. Especially those who were players. »
