Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Tuesday that world-class infrastructure will be central to India’s ambition to become a $5 trillion economy by 2027, and the road and transport sector is poised to drive economic growth, investment and large-scale employment.
Speaking at CII’s national conference ‘Future of Smart Roads – Safety, Sustainability and Sustainability’ in the capital, Gadkari said the ministry’s annual revenue is expected to rise from the current ₹55,000 crore to ₹1.4 lakh crore in the next two years, indicating India’s strong monetization and strong asset growth potential.
He said that the Union Government has discussed a comprehensive infrastructure plan for 2027, which has sustainability at its core. This includes the proposed use of 80,000 tonnes of sorted plastic waste in road construction and the reuse of treated water from treatment plants for highway construction – an approach that will significantly reduce environmental impact and lower construction costs.
Gadkari said 25,000 km of existing two-lane highways will be upgraded to four-lane and a ₹2,00,000 crore port connectivity program is underway to connect major ports directly to the national highway network. He added that improved road connectivity is already accelerating religious tourism and adventure sports in several areas.
Highlighting the economic multiplier of the sector, the minister said that every rupee invested in infrastructure leads to economic growth of ₹3.
