This is a huge setback for Pep Guardiola.
Manchester City Defender Josko Guardiol is set for surgery after the club confirmed he will need surgery on an injury sustained against Chelsea.
City announced on Monday that Guardiola suffered a fractured tibia in the 1-1 draw with the Blues, a result that left them six points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal.
It is unclear how long Guardiola will be sidelined, with City statement reading in part: « The defender will undergo surgery later this week and evaluation continues to determine the full extent of the injury and expected prognosis. »
Guardiola has made 23 appearances for City this season, with the Croatia international scoring two goals and providing four assists.
With Ruben Diaz also suffering an injury against Chelsea and John Stones already sidelined, City are are reportedly stepping up their interest in Crystal Palace defender Mark Guehi.
City are believed to be waiting to learn the full extent of Guardiol and Diaz’s injuries before making a decision on whether to pursue Guehi.

Yet confirmation of the nature of the injury to the versatile Guardiola, who can operate at both centre-back and full-back, could now prompt them to make their move.
Guehi was due to sign for Liverpool on deadline day in the previous transfer window, but the transfer fell through due to Palace’s inability to find a replacement for the England international.
However, with Guehi’s contract expiring at the end of the season, the Eagles can now look to cash in and avoid losing him for free.
City host Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League on Wednesday as they look to put pressure on Arsenal ahead of the Gunners’ clash with Liverpool on Thursday.
