The best horror films find terror in the simplest of places. Summer camp. Your dreams. Quiet suburban road. And in the new movie undertone (which is in lowercase on purpose), the horror comes from somewhere even simpler: your headphones.
Written and directed by Ian Tuason (who takes over the reins of Paranormal activity franchise), undertone tells the story of a podcaster, played by Nina Keary, who is sent mysterious audio recordings. Records that, played the right way, unlock something terrible. It feels kind of like The ringbut no VCR. Check out the first trailer.
It’s hard to tell exactly what’s going on here. Maybe someone is playing a cruel joke? Do the records really unlock something supernatural? If so, what is the purpose behind it and why are you sending them to that particular person? Whatever the case may be, the trailer certainly has us interested in learning more.
Also, the trailer itself is very impressive. We love all the layered voices and whispers you hear as the camera slowly pans around the room. You get this creepy feeling like you’re listening to something you shouldn’t be listening to. Which is probably what the character feels too.
Adding to the disturbing nature, A24 has also released this clip that gives us a little more of that scary audio. If you want to learn a bit more, this is probably worth a watch. If you’re still freaked out, we wouldn’t recommend it though.
undertone made its debut at the Fantasia Film Festival last summer and, as you can see from the quotes in the trailer, received generally good reviews. A24 then picked it up soon after. This brand that reminds of movies and campaigns like Hereditary, Talk to me, and I saw the glow of the TVadds a huge stamp of approval. In addition, the manufacturers of Paranormal activity must have liked it enough to hire Tuason to make the next installment. All of which is to say that you feel this will be worth seeing. And we will all get that chance on the second Friday the 13th of the year, March 13th.
