Bay loses his first match as Marseille coach

New Marseille boss Habib Bey suffered a 2-0 defeat away to Brest in his first game since replacing Roberto De Zerbi on League 1 club.

The hosts set the tone early. After Camory Doumbia’s ambitious long-range effort tested Geronimo Rulli, Brest took the lead in the 10th minute. Ludovic Iorke rose between the defenders and headed into the top left corner, giving the home side an early advantage.

Marseille struggled to respond for most of the night, Mason Greenwood shooting from distance and seeing another shot blocked.

Iork was the key to Brest’s threat. He went close again on the break before doubling the lead in the 29th minute.

Hugo Magnetti’s set piece found the striker in space and his header into the bottom corner made it 2-0.

Marseille went ahead before the break, Greenwood saving sharply from Coudert and Nayef Agerd missing from a corner.

The second half followed a similar pattern. Marseille enjoyed possession but lacked killer instinct.

Amine Guiry headed over and Benjamin Pavard missed from close range and Coudert missed Quinten Timber from distance.

Marseille were awarded a penalty in the 82nd minute after Dauda Guindo fouled Greenwood. Greenwood stepped up himself but Coudert guessed right, diving low to the left to preserve the two-goal lead.

From there, the frustration only grew for the visitors, who finally conceded defeat on a night Bey hopes to quickly forget.
