‘Same old story’ for Liverpool says Slot after Wolves defeat

Arne Slott called of Liverpool shock 2-1 defeat from bottom position Wolves ‘another setback’ which perfectly encapsulates their disappointing Premier League title defence.

The champions dominated possession and chances at Molineux but fell victim to their familiar lapses.

Andre’s strike in stoppage time flew past Alisson to save ninth league defeat of the season and dealt a crushing blow to Liverpool’s Champions League aspirations.

« Same old story, » Slott said bluntly. « We’ve been picking up points recently because we’ve scored a lot of set pieces, but the end result is we score one and they score two – another one in stoppage time – so that sums up our season again.

« What I’m trying to say is that we had a lot more possession than the other team and we created most of the open chances, but in open play we struggled to score. »

Wolves stunned the visitors 12 minutes from time when Rodrigo Gomez expertly flicked the ball past Alisson after Tolu Arokodare had beaten Virgil van Dijk. Mohamed Salah looked to have salvaged a point five minutes later with his first league goal since November, pouncing on Jean-Rickner Bellegarde’s errant pass.

But Wolves – who have already scored in stoppage time in their last three home games – were dealt the dreaded blow when Andre’s shot went wide.

Defeat leaves Liverpool fifth on 48 points, three behind fourth-placed Aston Villa and Manchester United, with the very real prospect of dropping to sixth if Chelsea beat Villa on Wednesday.

Slott’s frustration was palpable as he reflected on another game that had slipped from his side’s fingers.

« My expectations changed during the season because I expected more from us, » he admitted. « It’s another setback and we didn’t help ourselves with this result, not at all. There are still nine games to play but we’re losing points in a game when it’s absolutely unnecessary when you look at the flow of the game.

« If we play this game like this 10 times, I don’t think we lose 10 times – but I’m far from sure we win every time. So we’re not good enough. »
