Completed Climbing Challenge, Distance Challenge – BionicOldGuy

Last Tuesday, June 30, I completed my June climbing challenge with a total of 7,652 meters. The highest mountain in the world is Jomolungma (Mount Everest) at 8848 meters. If we look at the highest peaks of each continent, South America is in 2nd place with Aconcagua at 6,962 meters. Crossing 8,848 meters is a challenge called « Everesting ». I didn’t quite do it. But I’ve done a little more than « Aconcagua-ing », which feels pretty good.

A challenge makes training fun, so moving into July I signed up for the 800km challenge. I’m actually shooting 1000 miles which is just over 1600km. This requires just over 2 hours of riding at an average of 15 mph (24 kmph) or more, which seems doable. In the first 4 days I’m ahead of schedule by just over 111 miles so far. I enjoy this one more than the climbing one because speed on the flats is much more of a strength of the recumbent than the climbing.

Last Sunday I took a long cruise on the mountain roads northwest of Morgan Hill.

Blasting down the backside of Willow Springs
Turn onto Casa Loma Road
At the end of Casa Loma, the parking lot for Rancho Canada Del Oro Open Space is on the left
On Tuesday my group trip went to Croy Road where I lived. This is one of many climbs
Just under 2 miles up the road is 7025, my old house, behind the gate
Near the end of Croy is the entrance to the Swedish American community of Sveadal. It’s a private road, but the county has an easement across it to get to Uvas Canyon Park. At this point the road becomes narrow.
Note to self: Never climb Croy Road prone again! A car came up the hill as I was slowly going up it so I had to stop. There was no way I could climb a steep hill lying down, so I had to walk uphill
I call this « Ranger Hill » because the ranger station at the entrance to the park is just above the top. I could barely manage lying down with all the help my little engine could give.
It’s a lot more fun to get back on Kroy’s path!
« Grapes » dam.
Approaching the Uvas Dam rest stop entrance
There is a long fast fun descent after crossing the dam
