South Africa midfielder Adams has died aged 25 after returning to the World Cup

South Africa Midfielder Jaden Adams has died aged 25, just under two weeks after the tournament ended for his country world championship campaign.

Adams, who plays for Mamelodi Sundowns, played in all three of South Africa’s World Cup group games, starting two as they progressed to the knockout stages for the first time.

He did not feature as South Africa were defeated by Canada in the Round of 16.

Statement from South African Football Union (SAFPU) read: “SAFPU is devastated by the untimely passing of Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana midfielder Jayden Adams.

“Jaden most recently represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, carrying the nation’s hopes with pride, courage and distinction.

“His death is an immeasurable loss to his family, teammates, clubs, the football fraternity and the country as a whole.

“We offer our deepest condolences to the Adams family, Mamelodi Sundowns, Stellenbosch FC, Bafana Bafana and all those whose lives he touched.
