McCullum has been sacked as England’s Test coach

England have sacked Brendon McCullum as men’s Test coach – but he will stay on as one-day coach and T20 countries.

The New Zealander revolutionized England’s Test game alongside captain Ben Stokes after taking over the reins in 2022.

But recent results have dipped and Stokes surprisingly retired from cricket during the recent series against New Zealand.

« I’ve really enjoyed coaching the Test side and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved together. » McCullum said. “There have been some incredible highs and some tough days along the way, but that’s all part of taking on a challenge like this.

« Of course I’m bummed not to go on, but I respect the decision. My focus now is to give everything I’ve got to the white-ball teams and help England move forward. »

ECB chief executive Richard Gould paid tribute to the work of the former New Zealand captain.

« Brendon has breathed new life into the England Test side during an exciting period which has brought us some memorable victories and we are grateful for everything he has brought to the role, » Gould said.

England were reborn under McCullum and Stokes – with a theoretical ‘baseball’ style of attacking play – and won 10 of their first 11 Tests under McCullum and Stokes.

But they fell behind and were soundly beaten in last year’s Ashes in Australia and suffered from off-field distractions.

A nightclub incident led to Stokes’ retirement earlier this summer and left England in need of a coach and captain ahead of the Test series against Pakistan in August.
