Liverpool and Tottenham secured wins in their first pre-season games before Premier League season.
Andoni Iraola’s first game in charge of Liverpool ended with a 4-2 win over Sunderland in the US, with Spurs overpowering Auckland in a 2-0 win at Eden Park, New Zealand.
elsewhere Leeds were beaten 3-2 by Championship side Wrexham in their first pre-season game.
Liverpool v Sunderland: The Reds win Iraola’s first game
Liverpool made an impressive start under Iraola but injury to Joe Gomez overshadowed their 4-2 win over Sunderland in Nashville.
Defender Gomes, who was captain, went down and was taken off after just eight minutes in a less-than-ideal start, but goals from Kieran Morrison, Dominic Soboslai, Federico Chiesa and Lewis Coomas ensured they celebrated victory at the end of 90 minutes.
Enzo le Fee and Timur Tutiero were on target for the Black Cats, although the pick of the goals was undoubtedly Soboslai’s trademark play from outside the penalty area, with Morrison’s opener completing a slick team move also encouraging for the Reds.
Oakland v Tottenham: Richarlison in goal for Spurs
Mateus Fernandes was the only of Tottenham’s new summer signings to feature in the 2-0 win over Auckland in New Zealand.
Dane Scarlets took advantage of Roberto De Zerbi’s start to open the scoring in the first half before Richarlison doubled the advantage later in the game as Spurs’ more experienced heads, including Fernandes, entered the fray.
Sandro Tonali, who joined Tottenham in a £100m deal from Newcastle United, misses out with « a little problem », while defenders Jan Paul van Heke, Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi also miss out.
Leeds v Wrexham: Wilson makes debut for Whites
Harry Wilson played his first game for Leeds as they lost 3-2 to Wrexham in the Championship.
Kiefer Moore opened the scoring for the Florida Dragons before Joel Pirro equalized to make up for a missed penalty earlier in the game. Bailey Cadamarteri and Sean Longstaff were on target before Sam Smith scored the winner in the second half.
Wilson, a free signing from Fulham, was brought on for the second half and came close to equalizing late in the game but his shot went over the bar.
