‘Great privilege’ – Celtic confirm O’Neill will stay on as manager

Celtic have confirmed that Martin O’Neill has signed a one-year contract with an option for a further year to remain as their head coach.

O’Neill had two temporary spells with Celtic last season, replacing Brendan Rodgers and then returning to the club after Wilfred Nancy’s short and unsuccessful tenure.

The 74-year-old led Celtic to a double as the Bhoys beat Hearts 3-1 on the final day of the Scottish Premiership season to leapfrog them and claim the league title.

That triumph was followed by a Scottish Cup final victory over Dunfermline and now O’Neill is looking forward to bringing more success to a club with which he has won 10 trophies.

« It’s a great privilege again to continue as manager of Celtic, » O’Neill the club’s official website announced.

« Last season will live long in all our memories and being part of that success has largely whetted the appetite to work again for more days like these and bring our supporters those moments.

« Of course, none of this could have been achieved without the players and staff and I want to take this opportunity to thank them for bringing that level of focus, determination and talent to bear at the end of the season to secure a league and cup double. »

“In particular, I would like to thank the Board for inviting me back and giving me this opportunity again.

« We know, of course, that Celtic can never rest on their laurels, so we now aim to move forward together in the coming season, aiming to once again deliver results for the club and our fans. »

« Thank you to our fans for their continued support, it means everything to us. I look forward to returning to Celtic Park next season as we come together and aim to once again bring our fans the success that support deserves. »
