James Madison admitted that he was « a little embarrassed. » Tottenham are battling relegation on the final day of the season after a 2-1 defeat at Chelsea left their Premier League survival in the balance.
Enzo Fernandez fired a stunning long-range strike into the bottom corner in the 18th minute to give Chelsea the lead, before Andrej Santos scored from six yards in the 67th minute to double their advantage.
Richarlison’s close-range finish with 16 minutes remaining gave Spurs hope, but they were unable to find an equalizer after Maddison’s stoppage-time free-kick cleared the bar in the final act of the night.
Tottenham must now avoid defeat against Everton at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday or hope Leeds United do them a favor against West Ham to secure their Premier League status.
Maddison, making just his second appearance of the season after a long injury lay-off, came off the bench with his side two goals down and left no doubt as to the scale of what is required this weekend.
« We have to do our best for the club, for the badge, for the fans. It’s a bit embarrassing to be in this position. We will need our fans who were amazing tonight. I think we have the best away following in the league. »
On his own return from injury and what he can contribute on Sunday, Maddison was honest about the limits of where he is physically.
« The weather is terrible. You want to go out at 1-0 and make an impact. It’s a lot harder at 2-0. It was a bit difficult coming on. I’ve been out for a long time so I won’t be at my best. I’ve had a serious injury and you have to respect the injury a bit. I’ll do what I can on Sunday. »
He added: « That’s my job, that’s what I’m paid for. I haven’t played this season but when I do, that’s what we have to do. Anyone who’s worked in football or had that injury, it’s not easy to come back. It would be catastrophic for my career if something happened. »
Roberto De Zerbi cut a disappointed but defiant figure in his post-match assessment, refusing to accept that performance warranted the result, while acknowledging the moments that cost his side.
Tell hit the post early on and Richarlison had a header saved by Sanchez before the hour mark, but Spurs were undone by Fernandez’s opener and then lost the ball in a dangerous area, allowing Santos to make it 2-0.
« We created the first goal chance with Tel. It was a big save for Sanchez. Then we concede a great goal because Fernandes, a big player, we could do better. Then we stay in the game until the second goal, we lose a silly ball. We concede a second goal. But before the second goal we created a great big chance with Richarlison.
« I think we played a very good game, we lost.
« Now is not the time to think too much about this game. We have to prepare for the next game. We are playing in our stadium with our fans. With our qualities, with character, with pride and courage we have to play. But I am positive because today we played a good game. »
West Ham play Leeds on the final day. If Spurs fail to win against Everton and West Ham pick up three points, the gap between the sides could close enough to decide who goes down.
