Squads, stats and preview for the Three Lions’ final World Cup warm-up clash

England v Costa Rica match preview

England bring theirs world championship preparations conclude on Wednesday night when they face Costa Rica in Orlando, with Thomas Tuchel looking for a more convincing performance ahead of the Three Lions’ tournament opener against Croatia.

The German coach watched his side New Zealand lead 1-0 on Saturday in a game that offered little excitement.

Tuchel was openly critical of aspects of the display, with difficult weather conditions, a poor playing surface and widespread second-half changes contributing to a disjointed performance.

England have yet to score more than once in a game in 2026, although their defensive record remains strong.

Meanwhile, Costa Rica will miss this summer’s World Cup after falling short during CONCACAF qualifying. Los Ticos won all four of their second-round qualifiers, but failed to maintain that momentum going into the next phase, drawing four of six games and finishing behind Haiti and Honduras.

Their disappointment at qualifying led to the departure of Miguel Herrera, with former Venezuela coach Fernando Batista taking charge. The Argentine is still searching for his first win after recording a 2-2 draw with Jordan before defeats against Iran and Colombia.

England v Costa Rica team news

England have been boosted by the arrival of several players who have been given extra rest after their Champions League final appearance.

Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke have already joined the squad, with Rice and Saka expected to return straight into the starting line-up.

Tuchel is likely to move closer to his strongest XI after a heavy rotation against New Zealand. Jude Bellingham, Reece James and Nico O’Reilly are also candidates for starters, while John Stones and Mark Gwehi are expected to continue in the center of defence.

Costa Rica are without experienced striker Joel Campbell, who was not included in the current squad.

This puts more responsibility on Spartak Moscow forward Manfred Ugalde, who is the leading international scorer among the current Costa Rica squad and will be their main attacking threat.
